ASK DR. SUMNER
FINANCE How does the City make sure it's using my money well? Did you know...the budget is your ticket to answers!
How does the City make sure it's using my money well? Here’s how we make sure we’re doing a good job of using your money for City services.
First, we budget. Just like your own household finances (except maybe a little larger and more complex), the City budgets every cent it receives to make sure it uses the money where it’s needed to provide the services you expect.
Second, we ask for your suggestions. The annual budget process includes public hearings. If you think you know of a better way to use the money, please let us know at the budget hearings where it has a direct effect on how money is used.
Third, we get double checked. The state auditor comes every year and looks over how we use your money. This year, the auditor found the City's financial statements and operations were clean and actually congratulated the City for using recommendations for improvements from past years' audits.
Did you know…the budget is your ticket to answers! The word budget is almost as frightening as the word taxes. Yet, the budget is very important, even if it’s not the most exciting thing you’ve read lately. The budget is your roadmap to tell you where your money goes. Your money is used to make sure the stop light turns green, the toilets flush, the parks’ lawns are trimmed, the police car runs. And the budget tells you exactly how much is used each year to accomplish each task. In fact, that is rather exciting after all!
