SUMNER UNIVERSITY Thank you to all the new 2011 graduates of Sumner University. It was a pleasure to spend two nights with you discussing our city.

A few of Sumner's commissions have open spaces available. You can pursue your own interest or knowledge in such areas as design, forestry, parks, art and historic preservation.
History of Sumner University The birth of Sumner University was in the Sumner Planning Commission. The City had adopted a new Comprehensive Plan in 1994. The Plan called for an expanded role for the Parks Board in developing parks at neighborhood centers. It called for a Design Commission that would help implement urban design goals. A new Forestry Commission would promote urban forestry. The Planning Commission was concerned about how these other groups of citizen advisors would understand the Vision for the future of Sumner. Picking up on a seed of an idea from the new City of Newcastle, Sumner University was born.
